Research Project: Alternative Shaft Surfaces

Institute of Machine Components (IMA)

Influence of surface structures on the function of a radial shaft seal

The aim of the research project is to find and explain physical functional mechanisms between the sealing ring and the shaft surface on different, non-grinded shafts. Knowledge of the functional mechanisms can be used to determine application parameters for reliable tribological systems with alternatively manufactured shaft sealing counterfaces.

For this purpose, the influence of different surface structures on the functional behavior with regard to lubricant film buildup, pumping behavior, wear behavior and function of the tribological system radial shaft seal is investigated in test runs. By correlating the results with roughness and twist lead parameters, possible application limits are determined.
